What do the “P” and “I” mean such as 1280 × 720p and 1920 × 1080iwith HD?

Question:
What do the “P” and “I” mean such as 1280 × 720p and 1920 × 1080iwith HD?

Answer:
They stand for the two methods used to display HD images and movies, interlace(I) method and progressive (P) method. With the interlace method, after scanned lines with odd-number are displayed, scanned lines with even-number for the same image are displayed, each whole single image is displayed about every 1/30th second (1920x1080i). With the progressive method, lines are displayed in order from the top to bottom, a single screen being displayed about every 1/60th second (1280x.720p) By switching odd-number lines and even-number in the interlace method, sometime flickering can be detected.

It is generally said that for the same number of pixels, the progressive method is less flickering and higher image quality than the interlace method.
